Anglerfish Light Up Box Card

Hello my crafty friends! Today I’m sharing a fun box card with an extra surprise; it lights up! I designed this card for a class that I’ll be teaching at the Seattle Unstoppable Retreat next week. Woohoo! Who would’ve ever thought people would want me to travel to teach cardmaking classes? #lifegoals #squee #nowtogetagigonacraftingcruise

If you are one of the lucky ducks coming to the retreat, you’ll be making this card in person with me. If not, don’t worry, I made a video tutorial and that’s just like being there with us. Except we won’t know if you didn’t get dressed today πŸ˜‰ Okay, enough blabbering from me. Let’s put this card together! Step one: watch the video…

Step two: wait, I covered all the steps in the video… Lol, I did promise you links to the products I used though!

For the box pieces, I used the Lawn Fawn Shadow Box die set, the Ocean Add-Ons, and the Stitched Wave Borders. I used the small wavy banner die in Mama Elephants’ Favor Bag die set for my sentiment. Now the star of the show is the anglerfish with her light-up esca! Arguably, the anglerfish in The Rabbit Hole Designs’ Sofishticated stamp set is much cuter than a real life anglerfish, right? I love the zentangle patterns on the images in this set. I stamped them with Memento Luxe Nautical Blue ink, embossed them with clear powder, and cut them out with my ScanNCut. I made sure to leave a white border around the edges so the machine wouldn’t accidentally cut off the esca, or lure.

To add color to the background pieces, I ink smooshed with Blueprint Sketch, Mermaid Lagoon, Tumbled Glass, Peacock Feathers, Salty Ocean, Fossilized Amber, and Scattered Straw Distress Oxide inks. Instead of stamping “push” onto my background, I wrote it with a white gel pen. I watercolored the stamped images using my Tropical, Classic and Pastel Dreams Prima Watercolors. At the end of the video, you saw me add a little more shine to some of the elements with an Aqua Shimmer pen and Diamond Glaze.

To make the card light up, I used my Power Pack kit. It includes the battery holder, Chibitronics LED stickers, and copper tape. If you’d like more information on how to use the Power Packs, check out this page. They are available for purchase in my shop! (Can’t help a shameless plug here and there πŸ˜‰ )

You saw me use a variety of adhesives in the video. I have a confession to make. I can’t walk past a new type of glue without trying it. I have two cubbies full of adhesives in my craft room. Plus, a slew of them scattered on my desk. (And that doesn’t count the drawer full of Washi tape.) My go-to wet adhesive is PVA in a Fineline bottle. I recently switched from the yellow cap to the blue (finer gauge tip). I’ve decided that I want to go back to the yellow tip. But I’ve also decided that the yellow tip is too big for my Diamond Glaze, so I’m just going to wash the two out and switch them. (The screw tops are interchangeable.) You also saw me using red Super Tape, Sookwang Scor-Tape and foam tape. All three are staples in my craft room.

I think that covers everything I used. Wait! I forgot the paper… Bazzill Blue, Watercolor paper, and these envelopes. (The envelope is not a perfect match to the Bazzill Blue, but all of the blues in the background and the stamped images confuses the eye and they end up working nicely together.

Alright, now I’ve covered it all. (I think πŸ™‚ ) Thanks for hanging out with me today. You can find the sister article to this over on The Rabbit Hole Designs’ Blog. If you’d like to see another card I made with the same stamp set, check this out! If you’d like to see more light-up cards, you might like this article. I’ll be back soon with another fun card soon. Until then my friend, stay crafty. Want to see it light up one more time?
