Crafting’s Common Thread

Guest post by Antonious Maximus

Crafting covers a myriad of arts for a wide variety of reasons and requires a plethora of preparations that many find enjoyable. So this begs the question – why? Why all the effort and expense focused into one singular pursuit?

If I can put my finger on anything (cue Quasimodo and the bells of Notre Dame) it’s Sanctuary! No matter where it is practiced – the mind, body, and soul are preoccupied with the project. A full separation from everything to put yourself into creating something. Good old fashioned me time. We all want it, need it, crave it, and have to have it. It’s good for us. Whether it’s self expression, creation, catharses, therapy, distraction, or breathing room – it offers us refuge. A judgement free zone where you can pursue your labor of love. Sometimes you might have to create in less than idea conditions, but that space inside you is all yours, completely separated from everything, where you can be yourself and do your thing. Whether it’s a she shed, studio, a seat at the kitchen table, or a corner of the couch – it’s sacred space and hallowed ground.

When a project is done you return to the world with the results of what you have done to do with as you wish. You can tuck it away, give it away, display it, share it . So many things you can do and it doesn’t end there. The community offers a wide variety of classes, gatherings, challenges, and places to show your work while developing your skills. You can make a difference in a person’s day with the littlest of happy mail.

Whether it’s just a pencil and paper or an empire of media, student or teacher, shopper or shop owner, we all heed the call. It draws us in offering something very few other things do. When people try to tell me how to do it, when to do it, and where to do it I remember one simple truth – it’s mine to do with as I please.

If you take the time, you can see the entire world through their work from the comfort of your home. We may all be different but in this one single thread of precious commonality we are all the same. It is our safe place, our refuge. Crafting is our sanctuary. May you find peace, happiness, respite, and what you need in yours.[row]
