Color Pop Mini Slimline

Looking for a quick and easy card, with no coloring, that still packs a punch? Give this one a try! Add a colorful sentiment banner over black and white stencilling, to create a striking combination. Scatter a few colorful gems around, and the sentiment really pops!

Let’s start with the background. I smooshed Versamark ink through the Cat Eye Stencil from The Rabbit Hole Designs onto black cardstock. Then, I sprinkled on white embossing powder and melted it. (Be sure to use a powder tool first, to keep stray powder to a minimum.) The embossed pattern is raised and glossy; it’s a fun way to add texture and interest to an otherwise simple card. I trimmed the panel down with a stitched rectangle die, and mounted it to a mini-slimline card base (measuring 3¼” x 6¼”) with thin foam tape.

For the sentiment, I stamped a funny birthday greeting from the Sassy Sentiments stamp set, and heat embossed it with clear powder. (I prefer to stamp with black ink and use clear powder, rather than use black powder. It’s less messy.) After trimming the sentiment into a strip, I notched the corners with a ¼” hole punch. For the colorful layer behind, I partially die cut a fancy banner (from the same set the stitched rectangle die came in), shifted the die to be just the right height for the sentiment strip, and cut the other side. I mounted the layers together with thin foam tape, and popped it up on the card with more foam. Notice that it’s justified all the way to the right side of the card? I needed a little extra foam on that side to account for the thickness of the stencilled background. A few coordinating gems add sparkle, and carry the color out a bit.

That’s it, easy peasy! What do you think?

Here’s a closer look at the sentiment. Isn’t it hilarious? It’s one of my favorites for birthday cards for girlfriends.

I hope you’ll keep this card idea in mind next time you need a quick card. I suggest using a bold geometric stencil, or pattern paper for the background, to really help the sentiment pop. If you want to use a pastel color for the accent, try grey and white for the background instead. By the way, this card fits into a #7 coin envelope. I would use a black one for this card.

Thanks so much for stopping by today. I’ll be back soon with more fun cards to share!
