Clean and Simple Copic Meerkat

Hey crafty friend, I’m back with another clean and simple card for you today. Lol, you’ll be shocked to see it’s a mini-slimline. What can I say? It’s my favorite size right now. You might actually be surprised to see that I stamped it in black ink though, rather than Warm Glow. I’ve already colored this cute Caffeinated Meerkat no-line style a few weeks ago, so I wanted to try a different approach this time.

To begin, I lined the Meerkat and belated birthday sentiment up in my Misti, and stamped them with Extreme Black Ink. Then it was time to Copic color. I considered a crazy color scheme, like pink and purple fur (his hairdo is a tad punkrock, so it might work), but ultimately, I decided on a more natural palette. To help get light and dark spots in the right places, I googled meerkats and used an image for reference. It also helped me decide where to add shadows and highlights. I made sure to leave white areas, especially on his chest and belly. And for small areas, I used a big jump between colors. For example, the bottom of his nose is colored with E49, and the top with E44. To give his coat more of a furry feeling, I added several shades of brown dots. Then, I came back in with a white gel pen, adding more dots, and a highlight to his cup. You can see the Copic markers I used below…

When I was happy with the coloring, it was time to pull the card together. I simply cut the panel down with a stitched rectangle die, then added foam tape to the back. Before adhering it to a kraft mini-slimline card base (3¼” x 6¼”), I glued on a blue cardstock scrap that matched the blue of his cup (2⅛” x 6¼”), and added a coordinating strip of washi tape next to it. To dress the card up a bit more, I glued on a few blue and brown sequins. (They came free with my order from The Rabbit Hole Designs!) That’s it, easy peasy.

I really like the way this card turned out. The image and color scheme work for men or women, any coffee lover really. And you can change the sentiment to suit your needs.
