Watercolor Fun for Beachy Cards

Watercolors can be a ton of fun to play with and they come in lots of forms. For Day 2 of The Rabbit Hole Designs new release, I’ve got a pair of lovely beachy cards featuring the new By the Shore and Mermaid Hair stamp sets, and several forms of watercolors…

For my first card, I lined up my images and sentiment from By the Shore in my Mini Misti and stamped and embossed them onto watercolor paper and then masked the images off with masking fluid. I let the fluid dry completely before sprinkling on yellow and blue Color Burst Watercolor Powders. I lightly spritzed the panel with water and set it aside to dry. I was careful not to move the panel around too much so the colors didn’t blend together and to maintain as much of the grainy pattern as possible. After the panel was completely dry, I used an adhesive eraser to remove the masking fluid. Then I painted the images with my Prima Watercolors. I added a hint of shimmer with copper and silver gel pens. I quickly drew on fine lines and then dabbed them with my finger to blend the metallic ink into her hair and on the seashell. I trimmed the panel down to 4″ x 5¼” and mounted it to a white A2 card base with fun foam for a little dimension.

My second card features images from the Mermaid Hair set. Like I did with my first card, I stamped and embossed the images onto watercolor paper. Then I painted them with my pastel Prima Watercolors and cut them out with my ScanNCut. To create the background, I stamped and embossed the sentiment onto a watercolor panel, then wet the area where I wanted to add color with clear water. I dropped little dabs of light blue watercolor from the same Prima palette onto the wet paper and moved it around a little with my brush. I wanted a splotchy look that wasn’t too blended and I left a lot of white space on the panel. For a little sparkle, I sprayed the panel with Shimmer Mist. Once it was dry, I trimmed it down to 4″ x 5¼” and popped it up onto an A2 card base with fun foam, just like the other card. I popped the mermaid and fish up with foam tape to add more dimension. Since the background had a pearly shimmer, I wanted to add some fine glitter accents to the images too. I used my Aqua Shimmer pen to add highlights to the mermaid and fish. I love the combination of soft colors and delicate shimmer.

I hope I’ve inspired you to pull out your watercolors and play! The simple design and soft backgrounds on these cards will be easy to recreate. And don’t you just love the images in both of these new stamp sets? I adore them! They can be used together and they also coordinate nicely with the Beach Day set that I introduced yesterday. Remember the new release is available in the shop now!
