Cards for Dudes

Is it just me, or are guy cards sometimes hard to make? I think it might be my glitter addiction that makes it so difficult. I have to hold myself back from adding all the bling and sparkle. And if there’s no sparkle, how do we keep them from being boring? One way is to add a fun sentiment. Something that’ll make him laugh. Luckily, The Rabbit Hole Designs just released the new Sassy Sentiments set and it’s full of funny sentiments sure to cause a chuckle. Another way is to build a scene with images that aren’t too feminine. All three of the new caffeinated critters definitely feel like guys to me. I think any of them could be great for Father’s Day, or the hubby’s birthday. Today, I’m going to share a pair of cards for the dudes in you life!

First up, let me show you how I turned the Caffeinated Dino’s coffee mug into a beer mug! Cute, right? Or is it handsome? Lol, no it’s just cute, but my husband wholeheartedly approves. I started by stamping the small cloud from Love is in the Air with Versafine Clair ink. I masked it off and then lined the dino up so the cloud would be the foam on top of the mug. I stamped the dino and then pulled up the mask and embossed my image with clear embossing powder. Since I used the Versafine Clair, the ink will still grab the powder, even when it seems dry. I used a black Copic multiliner pen, size 0.3, and drew several ovals onto the mug. I didn’t worry about embossing them because I knew I’d be covering the whole mug with Diamond Glaze. I used watercolors to paint my dino. While he was drying, I taped a 1/4″ border off on an A2 sized piece of watercolor paper. I used the same yellow and orange that I used on the beer to paint an ombre background. I let it dry a little, then sprinkled on some clean water and lifted some of the color off. This made the background look a little bubbly. I let it dry completely.

When both my dino and background were dry, I used my ScanNCut to fussy cut the dino. I used an alphabet die set to cut out the word “dude” from the bottom left side of my background. I chose a sentiment from the new Sassy Sentiments set. Using my Mini Misti, I stamped and embossed “here, hold my beer” with the same ink and powder I used for the dino. I glued the background flat to a white card base, adding in the negative space pieces from the center of the die cut “D”s. I popped my dino up with a layer of foam tape. Then to finish the card, I applied white Liquid Applique to the foam and puffed it up with my heat gun. (This stuff is cool!) I applied Diamond Glaze to the mug and let it dry. I love the way it turned out!

For my second guy card today, I started by stamping and embossing the new Caffeinated Shark. This time, I colored him with Copic markers before cutting him out with my ScanNCut. I die cut a pair of waves from an ocean set. Then I die cut a yellow pattern paper rectangle with a wonky stitched die. I cut the waves down with the same die, so the sides would match up when I layered them together. In the wonky stitched die set, there is also a banner die. I cut one out and used the same blue markers that I colored the shark with to color the banner, and to add a little shading to the back wave. I glued the back wave to the yellow rectangle. I backed the shark with a very thin layer of fun foam and glued him to the scene. (The foam I used was in a pack from the dollar store and it’s only about half as thick as my foam tape.) I popped up the top wave with a layer of foam tape. Then, I glued the scene to a foiled card base that was in my stash.

To stamp the banner, I lined up the negative piece that I cut the banner from in my Mini Misti and used it as a jig to hold the banner. (That makes it easier to line up again if it shifts after stamping the first time. I stamped a sentiment from the new Perfectly Blended set and embossed it with white powder. I folded the ends to give it dimension and adhered it to my card with foam tape and PVA glue on the tips. To finish my card, I glued on three copper sequins. I know, I said no bling. But there is copper foil on the card base. And I just couldn’t help myself 😉 It still looks like a guy card though, right? I told you I struggled…

Do you have any good tips for guy cards? (Like how to incorporate glitter and flowers in a masculine way? Lol) Let me know down below. And have you hopped along with the other designers for day 2 of the new release yet? This team blows me away; they are so creative! When I saw Katie’s chocolate card, I was floored – it’s genius!!! I’m totally scraplifting that idea! No more spoilers though, you’ve got to hop along and see them all for yourself! Don’t forget to swing by The Rabbit Hole Designs’ shop too. The entire new release is available now. (By the way, how do you like having the release available at the start of the hop, as opposed to making you wait until the end of the week? I love it!)
