Hello, crafty friends! There is nothing quite like adding a touch of interactive magic to your holiday greetings, and this spooky season is the perfect excuse to do it. Today, we are brewing up a whimsical, light-up Cauldron Card that reveals a glowing hidden message when pressed! By pairing a fantastic new die set with Pear Blossom Press lights, creating this interactive surprise is easier than you think. Are you ready to see how it comes together?
Brewing the Perfect Spooky Background
To establish a perfect midnight mood, I started with a background panel cut from solid black cardstock. To introduce color and texture, I reached for Simon Hurley Create. Solar Sprays in Royal Flush, Deep End, and Trust Fund.
I applied a light misting of these purple, blue, and green shades across the dark surface. When they blend, they create an incredibly striking, eerie glow filled with beautiful mica shimmer. If your paper begins to buckle slightly from the moisture, don’t worry—hitting it with a heat tool dries the sprays quickly and coaxes the panel right back to a flat, even shape.
For the cauldron focal point—which comes from the Hero Arts September 2026 Monthly Hero Kit—I wanted an aged, metallic finish. I used my finger to lightly smear Tim Holtz Distress Foundry Wax from Ranger Ink over the surface. Make sure to set this with an embossing gun right away; heating the wax prevents it from flaking off later and locks in a stunning, slightly grungy silver sheen.
