The Sweetest Light-Up Dragon

Hello friends! This adorable light-up dragon card is sure to be a hit. I’m using Sir Spelly–the Spellbinders’ free gift with purchase dragon–and he is just the most perfect little critter for a card like this. I have a house full of boys, so I’m always on the lookout for something versatile and special I can make for them, and this one really delivers. The sentiment is Hello Friend, but you could easily swap in Happy Birthday.

For the background, I added visual texture by stamping a script onto light blue card stock for a tone-on-tone effect. It’s just dark enough to add interest without being too heavy. I used a die to cut a smaller top layer and cut the hole for the balloon right into the panel. A little ink blending in dark purple around the panel draws your eye right to the center of the card. It’s one of those small steps that makes a huge difference in the finished piece.

Now here’s where the magic happens! I used the A2 Vellum Color 45 Pack from Pear Blossom Press to diffuse the light behind that balloon cutout; the pearlescent white is absolutely gorgeous and gives the balloon such a beautiful glow. To power the whole thing, I reached for the Halo Light One Light Combo Pack, because the long skinny One Light puts the button in exactly the right spot. Then the PB Press Stamp and Die Bundle cuts a clever little trap door flap so you can change the battery whenever you need to without tearing open your card! Don’t forget to stamp “Press Here” upside down as well (or maybe that’s just me.)

Finally, the dragon goes right on the front panel, overlapping the balloon just enough to make it look like he’s holding it in his mouth. A little foam tape to create room for the light, and this card is completely finished. I hope this inspires you to give a light-up card a try sometime soon, because once you start, I really don’t think you’ll be able to stop!
